Chapter Six

Bijan didn’t really want to go home, so he drove around downtown for a while, absently looking at the brightly colored Victorian homes and cute shops. After a while, he glanced at the clock in his car and sighed. He knew there was no way he could continue making excuses, and he knew, the longer he was gone, the more upset his parents would be when he got back. He turned around and headed back to his neighborhood in the cliffs, wishing he’d been able to have the day he’d planned.

By the time he got back to the house though, his dejection had turned to annoyance. He opened the door, surprised to see his parents still sitting at the breakfast nook, casually taking in the morning paper and some coffee. He shut the door behind him, giving it a bit of a slam, and then stepped into the kitchen.

“Why did you have to do that?” he said to his parents’ surprised looks. “Why did you have to make him feel unwelcome?”

“We weren’t trying to make him feel unwelcome,” his mother insisted.

His father got to his feet, though, looking angry at his son’s outburst. “How did you expect us to react? You march in here, announce you’re gay by introducing your boyfriend, and then we find out that you’re having casual sex with someone you barely know! We did not raise you this way!”

Bijan was dumbfounded. It was true, that’s pretty much how the conversation had gone. His father was right to be surprised and a little shocked, and suddenly, Bijan couldn’t help but chuckle at the whole thing.

“What are you laughing at?” his mother demanded.

Bijan shook his head and held up his hands. “I’m sorry. You’re right. It’s all a bit insane, isn’t it?”

His mother’s hard expression softened into a smile, and she stood as well, taking her son’s hands. “It wasn’t as surprising as your father is making out,” she said and shot her husband an annoyed look. “I hope we didn’t ruin things for you.”

Bijan shrugged. “I don’t know. He’s very unpredictable, that one.”

He spent the rest of the day with his parents. He went ahead and moved them into the spare bedroom, knowing they’d only complain if they had to get a hotel for “no reason.” He didn’t really mind. He’d gotten used to having someone else around the house, though it wasn’t quite the same. Though his mother had a hard time with the cliff stairs, she wasn’t frail, so he took them out to the park and seaside hills he’d been planning to get Jimmy out to. In the end, they all had a lot of fun, ending the day at one of Bijan’s favorite restaurants he never had time to go to. In the back of his mind, though, a part of him wished he’d been having fun with the blue-eyed mystery man.

The next morning, he made everyone breakfast and then left his parents to their own devices. Their rental car was parked
